Shelter

In Cagayan de Oro on the island of Mindanao the Canossian Sisters run an orphanage called “Balay Canossa”. It houses around 30 orphans and street children suffering from a variety of physical and mental health issues. The children are comprehensively cared for by trained staff and the Canossian Sisters.

The orphanage
Thanks to mabuhay donations a new big orphanage on the outskirts, a house for learning and further lodgings were built in 1998. In contrast to the previous cramped house situated in a noisy slum, the children had peace and quiet, enough room for games and a big garden there.
In 2009 a new building mainly financed by mabuhay Kinderhilfe was erected. Due to floods and an expanding factory next to the premises, the “House of Friendship” was moved to Lapasan, a suburb of Cagayan de Oro, in 2017. The large grounds are also home to the Sisters’ convent, a Canossa nursery school, meeting rooms for street children and the “House of Friendship”, which is now called “Balay Canossa”.
