Since 1971 the Canossian Sisters have conducted a Health and Social Center in a gigantic slum area in Tondo/Manila. This is attended daily by numerous sick people, including many children. They are too poor to afford consulting a doctor or a stay in hospital. Here, they receive free healthcare from doctors and voluntary helpers and receive a warm meal on top. The medical equipment is modest and does not always conform to the necessary standards.
In former times the Health and Social Center regularly became flooded during the rainy season. This made the work of doctors and voluntary helpers extremely difficult and the maintenance of hygienic standards in treatment almost impossible.
In 2004, mabuhay supported an extensive renovation of the building, including raising the floor. Thus, the house is protected better against flooding. Besides, a new colour scheme made it look more appealing.
The delivery room was enlarged and equipped with a new delivery table. Apart from several smaller medical instruments, a new x-ray machine costing over 35.000 Euros could be acquired in 2007.
